Year of the Deer

This is the second retrospective blog of 2013. In the first, the turkeys were tracked throughout 2013 in a series of pictures. It turns out I have almost as many pictures of deer as turkeys. So this blog tracks our deer through the year. We put out three trail cameras and our early pictures of deer come from these. Early in the year there was enough snow that we could tell where the deer had been and the trail cameras provided when they were there. I think there is a bedding area down by the Bay and they would head North past the house to feed and return at night. A lot of their behavior is driven by the moon and available light. They tend to be nocturnal whenever possible.

It was a fairly severe winter with frequent snow. One consequence of this was the deer ate our Arbor Vitae and rhododendrons.

The next picture is interesting. It is of two does and a young buck. These were likely the twins we saw last year. Our guess was that both these does are pregnant due to their girth. The buck is in the center and has the beginnings of antlers and he looks a little thin. We named the smaller doe Bambette.

Our impression was that when Bambette’s mom was close to delivering the new set of fawns she pushed off the previous year’s fawns. Bambette didn’t want to go and she got kicked in the right hind quarter. We were able to track her by this scar.
